                                                "Pride"

The only true colour photograph known to exist of a Royal Northwest Mounted Police (later to become RCMP)  Musical rider. Taken at Edmonton Alberta, April 17th, 1914. Western Standard newspaper coverage and a B&W photo of the entire troupe are also included. Canvas photo is 9 X 12 inches in size.

                    "Crossroads 1"                                                " Crossroads 2"

Taken at a Native gathering, on a cloudy summer day in 1914, on the site of the now Edmonton main power house. So named "Crossroads" because Hugo perceived these images as depicting two separate cultures in transition. The family are wearing authentic Native beadwork, jewellery and moccasins, contrasted by the modern buildings, "store bought" hat and Hudson's Bay Co. blankets. Canvas photos are  9 X 12 inches in size.

                        “Lady In Blue”

Hugo’s wife Luisa, produced at the Viewegar Studio in 1913. Autochromes were, in simple terms, time exposures. Lighting as was available in 1913 posed a problem but Viewegar was adept at affecting the existing lighting to achieve his desired ambience. This image is a fitting  tribute to Hugo’s expertise. Canvas photo is 9 X 12 inches in size.

                                 "Forever Remembered"

Of all the autochromes by Hugo Viewegar, this portrait is the most intriguing, and to many the most beautiful. The original glass Autochrome now resides at the Alberta Art Gallery in Edmonton Alberta.

How Hugo achieved the double image shall remain a mystery. The Lumiere process did not allow for manipulation or double exposure. Experts cannot agree on how he must have done it. Their opinions have varied from "filters", "mirrors", to "one plate washed then placed over another". Never having seen one before, they all agree that it is totally unique.

The girl seated is his daughter Irmagaard, with her older brother Helmuth watching over her from the shadows. As children growing up in a harsh environment the two were always extremely close, and this portrait captures the essence of their relationship. It becomes more poignant because Helmuth died at an early age and was to remain a spirit in the background throughout Irma's life of eighty years. Canvas Edition limited to 37 worldwide  ... 8 X 12 inches in size.

                                     "Golden Hours"

Hugo’s three children, Irma, Helmuth and Lothar, taken at the Viewegar’s home on a cold winter evening in 1913. This image once again illustrates Hugo’s expertise in adapting existing lighting techniques to capture the soft artistic hues that only the Lumiere`s Autochrome could offer. Canvas photo is 9 X 12 inches in size.
